Dalavai Chalapathi Rao

Sri Dalavai Chalapathi Rao, hailing from Nimmalakunta in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, was introduced to the art of leather puppet making at a tender age of 13. Over the past four decades, he has dedicated himself to crafting leather puppets, predominantly portraying mythological themes for shows. Rao's expertise in this craft is not merely innate; he has also undergone formal training, solidifying his position as a pioneer in the field.

His influence extends beyond his own creations, as he imparts his knowledge to younger generations, ensuring the preservation and continuation of this traditional art form. Rao's dedication and mastery have garnered national recognition, with numerous awards highlighting his contributions. In acknowledgment of his significant contributions to the art of leather puppetry, the Government of India honored Sri Dalavai Chalapathi Rao with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2020.
